San Miniato

In the Arno Valley between Pisa and Florence, on a low hill in a dominant position over the valley, stands a pretty medieval town with a well-preserved historic centre, San Miniato.
Inhabited since early antiquity because of its strategic position, as demonstrated by the Etruscan tombs discovered in the area, it was an important centre in Roman times, particularly after the agricultural colonisation of the Arno valley in the days of Emperor Augustus, when the original core of the city of Florence was also founded.
Abandoned when the Roman Empire fell, the village was rebuilt in medieval times under the Holy Roman Empire, when it took on its present form.
