Pietrasanta

The most important town in the Versilia area, a centre of international importance for working marble and bronze, ever since it was founded in 1200 by Guiscardo da Pietrasanta the little “Athens of Versilia” (as it has been nicknamed for its history and artistic treasures) has been a gathering-place for artists from all over the world, from Michelangelo Buonarroti to Vasari and, in modern times, Henry Moore, Pietro Cascella, Kan Yasuda, Jean Michel Folon, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Joan Mirò and Botero. Many of them donated artworks to the city, making this lovely Tuscan town set amidst the marble quarries into a true open-air museum.
